Examining the Role of Urban Agriculture Education and Cultural Promotion in Tehran’s Primary Schools and Its Impact on Urban Sustainable Development

Abstract

This study examines the role of education and cultural promotion of urban agriculture in primary schools in Tehran and evaluates its impact on urban sustainable development. Given the expansion of urbanization and the reduction of green spaces, urban agriculture can serve as an effective strategy for preserving and expanding green spaces, improving urban quality of life, and addressing food supply needs. This approach not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also enhances students' environmental and social awareness through education and cultural promotion.

The aim of this research is to investigate the impact of urban agriculture education in primary school curricula and its role in achieving urban sustainable development goals. The study uses a qualitative research method, including semi-structured interviews with education experts, municipal officials, environmental and sustainable development authorities in Tehran, and administrators of private girls' schools in districts 1, 3, 10, and 12. Data analysis was conducted using MaxQDA software, extracting key patterns and concepts related to urban agriculture education and cultural promotion.

The findings indicate that urban agriculture can serve as an effective educational tool to introduce students to sustainability concepts and environmental conservation, contributing to urban sustainable development goals. However, challenges such as limited physical space, financial resources, the need for curriculum adjustments, and institutional support exist. The study concludes with recommendations to facilitate the implementation of urban agriculture in primary schools, including developing supportive policies, teacher training, and improving necessary infrastructure in educational settings, which can contribute to the sustainable development of Tehran.
