Objective: Shrimp farming in Iran plays a vital role in providing protein, boosting exports, and creating jobs, yet its expansion in southern coasts, including the Gwater Bay, faces environmental challenges such as mangrove destruction, algal blooms, increased salinity, and wastewater pollution. This study aims to assess the awareness and attitudes of shrimp farm operators in Gwater Bay regarding these impacts, offering a foundation for sustainable policy-making.
Method: A descriptive-analytical study was conducted using a self-reported questionnaire with 35 operators. Data were analyzed using SPSS software and statistical tests, including independent t-tests, ANOVA, and multiple regression. The questionnaire’s validity and reliability were confirmed by expert opinions and a preliminary test (89% reliability).
Results: The mean environmental awareness score was 16.27±3.4. Higher education and membership in NGOs showed a significant correlation with greater awareness (P<0.05). Internet and university education were key information sources, with 34% of operators linking shrimp farming to water pollution and 25% to aquatic diseases.
Conclusion: Enhancing awareness through education, emphasizing the role of education and NGOs, can support sustainable management. Policies focusing on wastewater monitoring and green technologies are essential to balance economic growth with ecosystem protection.
